June 11 is the International Day of Play, a UNICEF-led initiative that recognises play not just as a pastime, but as a critical human right. Joining this cause are industry leaders and Fanfinity partners Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro, as they are hosting dedicated events to celebrate the power of play. With the continuous growth of the gaming (and tabletop) industry, this initiative is yet another example of how wide a reach gaming has, what a pivotal role brands can play - even outside of entertainment - and how all of gaming can play a wider role in society as a pillar of community and cultural importance.
Today, our focus on the International Day of Play is an invitation for brands to evaluate their role in this space and how they can make an impact through gaming. It’s an opportunity for all parties to get involved, to join a movement that puts the community first, and that seeks to better people’s lives around the world through games and togetherness. In 2024, we renewed our focus on community with the goal to put the community first, to empower gaming culture. Since then, we’ve hosted many gaming events across the globe and have observed the positive impact a community and sense of belonging create. The way our communities connect and celebrate their favourite IPs by playing with friends and strangers is building real bonds - something every person in the world should have a right to experience and to have access to.
With its growing reach worldwide and importance in people’s lives, the gaming and tabletop industry sent a clear signal to brands: building community and nurturing a sense of belonging is something we can all be a part of. Several brands have already joined us to further build our events and communities, and we hope we can reach many more to get them involved.
